February 23Unfortunately, after passing Nagtik our course tended more to the West and on our new heading of 224M we could not fly any sails as the wind was right from the stern, lightening and the swells were rolling us from side to side preventing the sails from drawing. We lowered the chute and let out the main all the way on the preventer and motor sailed downwind, beginning at about 2am. At 3:30am, having completely left Nagtik behind (though it is still in sight with the full moon). The wind is a bit more from the East but not enough to keep any sail filled. We will wait till morning then pole out jib and re-set main boom out again and see. After dawn the wind shifted to almost due North and is now off the Stbd quarter (opposite quarter). The seas are calmer with about 4ft swells. Unfortunately, the wind is not only almost dead behind us but it has slackened again and is now in the 5-8k range. Not nearly enough for a boat like us to sail. At 3pm conditions remain the same. Light wind, 5-10k apparent from the NNE almost dead astern – now off the port qtr. again. Can’t set spinnaker, the wind is still too far from astern – we need wind from at most a maximum of 145 degrees off the bow for the asymmetrical spinnaker to set. We motored all day and into the night with the wind light from the NNE or even North, but only 8-10k and almost dead astern. |
