March 30
The Queen Jane was splashed today at app. 2pm NZ time. We are so happy to
be back in the water and back in our home we are grinning from ear to ear.
The splash went well and we motored to our new slip with friend Anders
aboard. The wind was blowing a bit but we had several line handlers from
neighboring boats waiting nearby.
After docking we started the reefer (fridge) and the newly rebuilt genset
and all ran smoothly. In fact, we ran the generator a full 2 hours which
may be the longest it has ever run at one time. There was one potential
problem with either the engine, gearbox or prop shaft in the form of a
strange fluctuation in the sound of the shaft (which coincided with a
change in the rpm of the engine). Further investigation will be required.
Of course, just because we are back in the water now by no means shows we
are done working on the boat and ready to go. Far from it. In addition to
the above described issue, we have several outstanding problems/issues
like our water maker which was sent to Auckland for repair (after small
cracks were discovered, leaking, in the high pressure hose fittings on the
Clark pump). We are still awaiting its return after more then 3 weeks.
Last week we noticed our wind speed indicator has failed - the wind cups
which spin on top of the mast seem to be stuck. They are not spinning like
they should be. Finally, in the category of things I have just installed
or repaired which either do no work or STILL do not work - a pair of
gauges to monitor the generator which still don't work. One is for water
temp the other oil pressure; I just installed the gauges and senders last
week so today was the first time I tried it. They don't work.
Its good to be home.
