June 28Today we left Likiep after spending an entire month there. Further, we did not move the boat once during the entire time, hence this is the first entry in the Ship's Log since the 28th of May. We left Likiep this morning at about 7:30am bound for Majuro which lies to the SE about 200 miles distant. The weather is clear with blue skies and light winds, but unfortunately the wind is from the East and not the NE as we would prefer. Therefore we are unable to lay Majuro under sail. Instead we are motoring due East to pass to the North of Wojte Atoll, the Eastern end of which lies about 60 miles from the Eastern end of Likiep. After passing over the top of Wojte, we will be able to shape our course the SSE and lay Majuro on a heading of 151M which we should be able to sail. It is now noon and we are about 52 miles from our waypoint which is set some 6 miles East of Wojte (we don't want to come to close to the Wojte's Eastern end). We are motoring just above 5k on a course of 92M (101True). Seas are relatively calm with a swell of about 3-4ft from the East. Wind is from the ENE at about 10k. We should arrive off the Northeastern tip of Wojte at about 7:15pm and reach our waypoint at about 10pm. From there we have 146nm to reach the pass into Majuro lagoon. Assuming a speed of 6k that would put us at the entrance by 10pm the following night (the pass into Majuro lagoon is well marked and we have entered at night 3 times already so this will not pose any problem for us). We should be anchored at Anemwanot Island - about 7 miles inside the pass - by midnight making a total door-to-door trip of 41.5 hours. At 2pm we raised the mainsail and began to motor sail. The wind has come a bit more to the North of East allowing us to keep the main full. This has given us an extra three quarters of a knot and we are making between 5.5 and 6k over the ground. It is now 7pm and we have passed the NE corner of Wojte and turned to the SE. With the wind from the NE we were are able to sail with main and genoa on a course of 120M at about 6k. In another 13 miles we will be clear of the Easternmost extremity of Wojte (6 miles to the East of it in fact) and will then turn Southward once more toward Majuro which will put us on a course of 152M which should be a nice reach with the wind on the beam. Weather conditions remain excellent with clear skies and light puffy clouds, calm seas with a 3-4ft swell from the East and about 10-12k of wind from the NE. At 9pm we are now 147 miles from Majuro. We are about 6 miles East of Wojte and we are sailing on a course of 145M (which is about 7 degrees East of our course so we can get a bit of extra Easting in case the wind shifts more to the South later). Seas remain calm with a 3-4ft swell and the wind is about 12-14k from the NE. |
