August 17
Last night was pleasant. The boat sailed along all night without much
attention from either crew. In morning as the wind died we started the
engine to charge batteries and motorsailed in 7-10k. By 9m we had the
engine off and were sailing wing and wing downwind on a heading of 272M.
As of 11am we have 493nm remaining to Suvarov. We are travelling at the
incredible speed of 4.5k and expect to arrive before end of the day on
Wednesday the 22nd.
At about 2pm we had a fish on the line. We were using the orange plastic
squid thing, I switched it for the new marauder lure that didn't seem to
be working. It was a nice Wahoo, maybe 5ft or close to it. Enough fish for
two weeks, and damn good fish too! Wahoo is not known much in the US,
especially on the East Coast. In hawaii it is called Ono and on many West
coast menus it is listed that way.
By 3pm the wind had died even more and we motorsailed till dinner time
making 7.5k over ground. Before dinner we shut down the engine and sailed
at 3-5k in 8-11k wind from the NE. At 8pm it is still the same. We are on
a course of 173M and are making between 3.5 and 4.5k in 7-11k wind.
