August 26
This morning we left Suvarov and are now bound for American Samoa. We
raised anchor at about 8am and by 9am we were outside the pass and heading
West in moderate seas and a nice 15-20k wind. We are running downwind wing
and wing with the genoa poled out to port and the main to starboard. Our
goal is the twin island of Ofa and Olesega in American Samoa about 358
miles away.
The skies were sunny with about a 40% cloud cover early in the day which
evaporated before 10am. At noon we were making a solid 7k over ground on a
heading of 250 magnetic in seas 4-6ft with a swell from the SE. We expect
to arrive at Ofa/Olesega on Tuesday the 28th in the late afternoon if the
wind holds out. If not we will have to heave to the night of the 28th and
make landfall the morning of the 29th.
It is now 5:30pm and the wind is still from the SE at 15-20k and we are
making between 6.5 and 7.5k over ground. The seas have calmed down a bit
but the swell is still from the SE at 4-6ft. We have covered about 53
miles so far and have 328nm remaining to go.
