April 30

It is pouring rain today and Jonah had Allan for a sleepover and he will stay until after lunch. It hot and stuffy onboard! I am so glad we are not on passage to Fiji. We have heard from "Karmaladen" and "Capricorn Cat" and it is fairly rough out there. Sharp seas and lots of squalls. "Capricorn Cat" ripped his brand new mainsail and both boats struggled with unexpected seasickness. They are headed towards Samoa which is a challenging place to sail to from the Marshalls.

We are working on a permit for Alinglaplap but am unsure if we will get it. The new mayor raised the fee to $150 which is too steep. If not, we will head to Aur and then north to Wojte and Likiep. I am well provisioned although I could always use more - the biggest problem is fresh vegetables and fruit. Everything is shipped in refrigerated containers so it spoils quickly unless you keep it refrigerated. In countries with farms, we buy fresh un-refrigerated produce and it keeps for a long time. I am going to try to pack our fridge with as much as possible and hope for the best. We can carry enough to hold us for 6 weeks so it will be a bit thin on fresh food for the last two weeks since we plan to be out 8 to 9 weeks and I don't think you can get scurvy in two weeks! I know many cruisers who routinely go without much more than fresh onions for weeks at a time.

I am so tired of town but I don't think we will leave until this weather system goes through and that looks like several more days and maybe another on top of that so the seas will calm down. I don't sound very brave but Jordan and I feel strongly that our hesitancy to not leave in bad weather is good for safety and general crew happiness.

Today is a holiday in the Marshall's, it is Constitution Day. There are big Taiwanese Navy ships here for the celebration but I am not sure if we will do much in the rain. I am definitely not going to the parade in the rain. The radio keeps crackling with Asian voices talking to each other. There are 8 brand new tuna fishing vessels from Japan who stop here on the way to South America to fish for tuna for the next year. The lagoon is jumping.
