May 17
It is now 7:15am and the sun has been up since 5:30am. Kate took the 3-6am watch and
the skipper got some sleep. Conditions this morning are about the same. Light breeze
from the W/SW at about 12k. We have the genoa out again and have throttled back
somewhat to conserve fuel. We are making about 6-6.5k over ground on a course of 60M.
This is slightly to the South of the rhumb line (the direct course to Noumea) but we
want to keep South in case the SE trades come back before we arrive. After another day
or so we will begin to turn a bit more Northerly to point to Noumea.
It is now 9:15am and conditions are the same. The weather is clear with clouds to the East
and South. The temperature is rising and it looks like it will be a hot day. The sea is
still a bit rough and confused with large swells from the SE maybe 8ft. The crew is, as
expected, already exhausted. The down side of a 2 man crew. We find after 2 or 3 days our
bodies adjust to the strange sleep patterns and we feel somewhat normal, but the first days
are the hardest and exhaustion is common, for us anyway. We have approximately 630nm from
Noumea. We are making about 6k over ground with 11kt of wind from the WSW.
At 3pm conditions remain the same. Rain showers were visible on the horizon to the South
earlier this afternoon about 24nm away but have subsided. Wind remains light at 10kt from
the West. Sometime in the last 6 hours we have passed beyond the Southern fowing current
along the east coast of Australia. We now seem to be taking advantage of a favorable
current and have picked up a good half knot or more. We have also continued to bring down
the engine speed to conserve fuel, we are now running at about 1600rpm and making 6.5-6.8k
over ground on a heading of 65M.
It is now 5pm and the sun has set. Conditions have not changed. Time for email!
