June 19

This morning we decided to leave Kimuta Island even though we arrived just yesterday. The reason was a really bad swell which rocked the boat all night long. When we arrived yesterday at noon it was hardly noticeable – it was low tide. As the tide came up things got worse and worse till just after dark which it was full high tide and a regular swell was coming in.

We raised the anchor at 8:15am and headed out of the anchorage in a NW direction and coasted West along the N. shore of Kimuta till we rounded the point and headed South for the Calvados Chain of islands. The weather was fine was a 12-15k Easterly to ESE wind and a moderate swell of 2-4ft. Skies were sunny and clear. The Duna Labwa entrance to the Calvados lagoon (the chain being completely enclosed within a barrier reef 110 miles long and about 30 miles wide) lies only 13 miles to the South of Kimuta and we headed SSE on a course of 165M, motor sailing at first then sailing when the wind came more to the East. We covered the distance in just two hours and entered the lagoon at about 11:15am. From Duna Labwa we continued SSE to the island of Pana Wina about 8 more miles away inside the lagoon (which was very calm being protected by the barrier reef from swells and the fetch being short due to the various islands dotting the lagoon). We anchored at Pana Wina at about 12:30pm in 40ft of water.
