July 31

This morning at 9:30am we finally pulled up the anchor and headed out of the anchorage we have spent the last week in. It was a very pleasant spot to wait out the bad weather; we had 3 or 4 days of rain and one day of really high winds. The sun is shining brightly today and the wind is down to about 4k from the SE. We are heading for the other side of the island to the anchorage by the main village of Fare (pronounced Far-Ay). It is only about 10 miles and the seas are calm with a 3ft swell from the East. We are motoring at about 7k and expect to be there within an hour and a half. It is now almost 10am and we have about 8nm to go.

At 11am we arrived off the village. There are two anchorages here, one just off the village in about 50ft of water and another area near the reef in about 12ft. We anchored near the reef. The bottom is hard scrabble and crusty sand mostly with a sprinkling of coral heads. We needed three attempts to find a sandy patch where our anchor would bite. Each time I dove on the anchor with mask and snorkel to inspect the set. The first time the anchor hooked a small coral head which did not seem reliable, the second try found us dragging over the crusty scrabble. On the third attempt we dragged over the hard crust until we ended up in a large sandy area where the anchor finally dug down and buried securely. After inflating the dinghy and mounting the engine we cleaned up a bit and went into the village to have lunch and do some shopping.
