September 9
We ran all afternoon, yesterday, with the spinnaker making between 4 and
6k at times, briefly. By nightfall wind had increased and we were making a
steady 5.5k in 15k from the East. By 11pm the wind had shifted nicely
around to the SE and we took in the chute and let out the genoa. We had
some periods of light rain during the night and each time a nice increase
in wind.
This morning - it is now 7:30am - the wind remains from the SE but is
light at 10k. The sky is clearing and sunny and the seas are calm with a
3ft SE swell and some light wind chop. We need to put up the spinnaker
again, but we are motor-sailing first while charging batteries for an hour
or two. Our distance to go to Sola is 480nm.
It is now 3:30pm and we are moving slowly but smoothly at about 4-5k in
wind of 7-10k from the SSE. The wind has been backing to the South all day
making our going a bit easier, though at a certain point the spinnaker
must be lowered as it cannot be used forward of the beam.
We hooked a fish at 5pm but it was a skippy (Skipjack) so we threw it
back. Can't stand them. Grey and tasteless. Sun is setting and the wind is
steady at 10-11k. We still have the chute up and are basically reaching
with it. Nice motion, smooth seas. Wonderful.
