November 2We left Dunk Island at about 10:30am this morning. We didn’t want to leave too early because we want to arrive at the entrance to Hinchinbrook Channel just at low tide. Then, as we enter the channel the flooding tide will help us along. If we arrive as the tide is falling we will be fighting against a strong current. Weather is fine this morning with a light 10k wind from the SE and we are motor sailing with jib alone. Skies are about 25% cloudy with lots of sunshine. As we approach the entrance to the channel the wind has increased and the water has developed a nice chop. We enter the channel at about 1:30pm. We have about 11 miles to reach the anchorage which is in a little side creek called Guyundah Creek. At 3pm we are anchored in the center of the creek. It is flat calm like a mirror, of course. Hinchinbrook Island is comprised of several mountains which look to be at least 5,000ft. It is completely wilderness here with no man made settlement of any kind visible, which of course can also be said for most of the Queensland coast. The place reminds of Maine or Montana but tropical of course. |
