November 8

Left upstart at 6:15am. The weather was cloudy and partly overcast with about 65% cloud cover. Winds were from the East at 10-12k and the seas were mostly calm with a 3ft chop. Our goal today is Gloucester Island, about 45 miles to the ESE. We rounded the cape and headed almost due North at 30M motor sailing with main and genoa. When we reached a point about 7 miles off we turned to starboard so that our course to Gloucester Island would be about 120M. At that angle we hoped to find we could lay Gloucester.

At 8:00am we turned to the SE and made our course 120M. The wind angle was only about 22 degrees from the bow so we continued to motor sail.

It is now 10am and the wind has finally come around to the NE as expected and we were able to shut the engine and sail. The conditions are perfect with calm seas and the wind about 50 degrees off the bow. We are making 7.5k over ground.

We arrived at Gloucester Island at about 2:20pm and spent about 15 minutes poking around deciding where to anchor. We picked a spot as close to the beach as we could get and it is only 17ft of water, and it is high tide. We are still at least 200 yards from the beach. It is calm and peaceful, so we like it. There are “bullet” winds which scream down the mountain (the island itself is highly mountainous) and are thus called bullets.
