December 4
Today was a much better day then yesterday. We spent most of the morning
cleaning up the debris from the bow, trying to get the furling genoa down
(unsuccessfully) and making preparations for friends to fly in from the
mainland with materials for making temporary repairs. We have also had
several visitors. First the local police came by to take our statements
about the incident. The police informed us that he was acting on behalf of
the Maritime Safety Authority, the New Zealand agency responsible for
investigating accidents at sea. He was a really nice guy and even gave
Jonah a ride in his fast inflatable!
After that we were visited by a pair for reporters from the New Zealand
Herald who were in the area doing a story on the Great Barrier Island and
its colorful people and attractions. They spent an hour or so chatting
with us, taking notes, writing a story, taking photographs. Very glamorous.
Unfortunately, they tried to use the telephone at the home of our hosts, Allen
and Mary, and were unable to get a satisfactory internet connection. They said
since they missed the deadline the story would not be run! Oh well, I guess I
will not be famous in New Zealand after all.
We have also accidentally located another boat which we know, "Batrachian" and
the skipper, Steven, is an experienced boat builder from England. He is only 3
miles away at another bay and will be moving here in the morning to have a look.
At noon our friend Anders arrives with another boat builder friend of his from
Tauranga and between the four of us we will easily be able to effect a temporary
repair and get the boat moving to Tauranga. There appears to be a front moving in
on Friday and we are anxious to get the boat moving by Thursday evening.
